DISTRICT CONFERENCE  2009
A team led by President Ray Porrelli attended
both plenary sessions at the Crowne Plaza
Hotel in Glasgow on 3 and 4 October.
By general agreement the star turn was
Andrei Danilenko who was the RI President's
representative at the Conference. Andrei
was born in California before returning to
Russia, and he humorously recounted his
introduction as a 27 year old to Rotary in
Russia in 1994. Initially sceptical he soon
began to appreciate the benefits of
membership, and founded a club for
younger members. He then went on to
establish District 2220 in 2006 and became
its first Governor.
Recounting his experiences during this period he talked with humour and passion about his belief in Rotary and its principles, which he believed were the basis for better understanding among nations and their people.
Other speakers were immediate RIBI Past President Ian Thomson, Mel Young  from the Homeless world Cup, and Natalie Hunter from the Dollywood Foundation, a charity founded by Dolly Parton to improve literacy in pre school children.
There were also contributions from the visiting New Zealand GSE  team and ambassadorial students  from Zambia and Indiana, USA, prior to the final address from keynote speaker, Sir Tom Farmer.
